Skin Below the Chin keeps you under budget

I’ve splurged on so many expensive skincare products lately that when it came time to stock up on a good brand of body exfoliating cream, I headed straight for my local drugstore.
And I wasn’t disappointed.
For just $7.99, I picked up a large tube of Skin Below the chin exfoliating body scrub in Pure and Clean, which smells like a mix of the ocean and fresh laundry.
Skin Below the Chin is manufactured by Delicious Brands, which promises no harsh chemicals, parabens or mineral oil are used in its products. Choose from an invigorating, but gentle, line of scrubs as well as body cleansers, sprays and moisturizers. Scents include Watercress Fig, Vanilla Butter, Lavender Fougere, Apricot Ginger and Lime Basil.

Are You Concerned About Lack of Vitamin D?

Caring for your body isn’t just about what you slather on your skin. It’s about getting the proper vitamins, minerals and nutrition too. You want to protect yourself from the sun, but you want to get the benefits of vitamin D from sunlight. It sounds like a Catch 22, but it’s not one that can’t be easily remedied. In a recent survey by Neutrogena, they discovered that 32% of Americans are somewhat concerned that using sunblock will prevent them from getting enough of the essential vitamin D.
Some dietitians, doctors and other experts recommend intakes of up to 1,000 IU per day (that’s more than twice the previous recommendations.) Though I’m not saying you should skip the sunscreen and go bask in the glory of the summer sun. However, you should do what you can to increase your intake.
We all know about vitamin D enriched milk and cereals. And here are a few other foods that provide a good amount of vitamin D.
Cod liver oil
Herring
Catfish
Mollusks
Salmon
Trout
Halibut
Sardines
Mackerel
Sounds like a lot of fish, right?
So, you might need a little help from a vitamin supplement. If so, check out VIACTIV CACalcium soft chews. They provide 125% of the Daily Value of Vitamin D in each chew.
I actually started these about a year ago. They come in four yummy flavors (chocolate, milk chocolate, caramel and raspberry). You can find them in most drugstores for about $7-8 for a 60-count canister.

Yogurt-Based Beauty Products

Yogurt isn’t just delicious. It’s also great for your skin. I have found a variety of beauty products made with yogurt, both store-bought and homemade treatments. This terrific beauty recipe features five ingredients from your kitchen — strawberries, yogurt, olive oil, honey and oatmeal. The mask will brighten your skin, treat blemishes, exfoliated dead skin cells and moisturize dry, dull skin.
Ingredients:
4-5 small strawberries
2 tablespoons of yogurt
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 teaspoons of honey
2 spoonfuls of oatmeal
The strawberries contain natural antioxidants which protect your skin from free radicals. Berries also help to absorb oil and treat breakouts. The yogurt helps refine pores and tone skin, while the olive oil hydrates and nourishes the skin.
Watch this video to see how to make this fabulous mask.

How to Extend Your Summer Glow

Before you know it, the weather will start cooling down and fall will be here. If you want to extend your summer glow well into next season, there are many ways that you can maintain that sun-kissed look. Don’t be tempted to head to the tanning salon.
With a little makeup, the right beauty products and some knowhow, you can ease your way into fall.
Pick the Right BronzerWhen your tan begins to fade, start using a little bronzer to help extend that healthy glow. Don’t go too dark — it will just look fake. Instead pick a bronzer that is just two shades darker than your natural skintone. Bronzer generally comes in liquid, lotion, cream or powder formulas. Liquid is oftentimes too heavy, while powder tends to show off skin imperfections. Try a cream, gel or lotion bronzer like Josie Marn Cream Bronzer.. Use it subtly on the areas where the sunlight naturally hits your face — forehead, cheeks, nose and chin.
Use a Sunless TannerFor your body, use a sunless tanning product to maintain your glow. Keep you skin moisturized with a rich body lotion and then apply the tanning product often as directed to continue looking bronze and beautiful. Clinque Self Sun Body Daliy Moisturizer will soothe, soften and nourish skin, and provide a natural looking glow.
Highlight Your LocksIf the sun gives your hair natural highlights in the summer, extend that look for fall by heading to the salon. Gentle face framing highlights with yellow or gold undertones will brighten up your face and provide a healthy, summertime look. For natural homemade highlights, you don’t need to pour on the lemon juice. Other products from your kitchen can give you the highlights you want.
Olive OilOlive oil can be a deep conditioning treatment that is also a natural hair lightener. Comb a generous amount of oil through your hair from roots to tips. Then sit out in the sun for about an hour. When you rinse it out, you will notice beautiful natural highlights and your hair will be hydrated too. You can repeat this treatment a few days a week until your hair is light enough.
Golden BeerGet yourself a six pack of light colored beer. Pour four bottles over you head, saturating your hair. Grab the other two beer and go outdoors. Drink up while reading a magazine or lounging by the pool. An hour later, rinse your hair with plenty of cool water. Repeat twice a week.

Yu-Be Skin Cream

For years, I would see my aunt using Yu-Be skin cream on her hands. I never thought much of it until someone sent me a sample of this cream to try out for myself. This glycerin-based cream does a lot more than moisturize, it really heals, protects and nourishes your skin.
Enriched with vitamin E, vitamin B2 and camphor, this multi-use cream is perfect for dry hands, cracked heels or just about any other part of your body. It also can help prevent scarring from burns, protect your skin from cold and wind, and even be used as a cuticle cream.
Created by a Japanese pharmacist in 1957, this non-greasy cream is natural and safe to use for your whole family. You can purchase Yu-Be online at yu-be.com for $24 for a 2.75 oz jar.
They also make lip balm, body lotion, skin polish and other products. You can also find Yu-Be at Sephora and other retailers.

Olay Sensitive Moisturizer Bar

For years, I have been using products from Olay — face creams, moisturizers, cleansing cloths. Recently, I had an opportunity to try some new products from Olay and I was delighted.
Olay offers a lot of products beyond their classics. You can choose from the Definity, Regenerist, Total Effects, Complete and many other lines. But my new favorite product is very basic — I’m so surprised that I have never tried it before.
From the Olay Body Cleansing line, you MUST try the Olay Sensitive Moisturizing Bar. This "soap" is specially formulated for people like me who have sensitive skin. Created from unscented moisturizers and no dyes, it leaves your skin ultra soft, fresh and clean.
With a gentle lather, this bar rinses super clean with no residue. You can use this bar alone or in conjunction with their body washes and other body products.
As you probably know, Olay products are sold at most drugstores, grocery markets and superstores. To learn more about the Olay Sensitive Moisturizer Bar or any of their other products, visit olay.com.
On their website, you will see an opportunity to get a $20 rebate when your purchase $50 worth of Olay Facial Moisturizers or Facial Cleansers.

Hirsana miracle pills for skin and hair

Everyone knows the key to flawless skin has far more to do with what you put into your body than the types of creams you use.
But with all of the running around we have to do, how many of us remember to drink four glasses of milk a day and eight glasses of water, as well as eat a balanced diet replete with fruits and leafy greens?
And even if you are vigilant about your diet, would you have a clue where to find Golden Millet Oil — a nutrient rich in beta-carotene that is said to strengthen hair and nails

and make skin more radiant?
Although millet is usually used in its dried form, a leading Swiss manufacturer called E. Zwicky A.G. has developed a way to extract the pure and highly concentrated Golden Millet Oil. The result is a capsule called HIRSANA Golden Millet Oil, which supplies vital nutrients, vitamins and zinc to keep your hair and skin looking lustrous.
Other ingredients in Hirsana Capsules include 100% of the FDA Daily Value of vitamin B6, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin E and biotin, the water-soluble B-complex vitamin that gets most of the credit for building strong hair and nails.
The recommended dosage is two capsules a day for three months. After the first three months, you should decrease the amount to one capsule a day. The pills cost $36 for 30 capsules and $90 for 90 capsules.

Canon PowerShot S90 brief hands-on

The Canon's PowerShot S90 appears to represent exactly the sort of compact we like - a bright lens, good screen and easy access to a selection of manual controls. Then we discovered the control ring around the lens and thought it worth publishing our first impressions. Click here to have a read of our brief hands-on with Canon's latest photographers' compact.
It was way back in August 2005 that Canon launched the last in the line of its S-Series compact photographers' cameras. After four long years, the company has rebooted the range with the sleek and stylish looking S90. This reinvigoration of a seemingly extinct line prompted us to take a closer look into this long overdue successor of the S80. The S-series has gone under the knife for a cosmetic makeover with the S90 emerging complete with new design elements not seen in previous Canon compacts.
The apparent success of the Panasonic LX3 (or, at least, the near-impossibility of getting hold of one) suggests it tapped into a market for compacts packed with advanced features in a compact body. Canon's own G10 offered a similar feature set but in a significantly chunkier looking body. So it's hard not to see the S90 as Canon's response to the LX3. This impression is enhanced by the S90's impressively bright F2.0-4.9 28-105mm stabilized lens - it's not as ambitious at the Panasonic's lens but it covers a much more useful range.
As with the LX3, Canon has chosen to incorporate a relatively large (1/1.7", 0.43 cm²) sensor which has been designed with high sensitivity, rather than just higher megapixel count in mind, to make the most of the bright lens. This 10 megapixel sensor is then mated with Canon's latest Digic 4 processor to offer what the company describes as a dual anti-noise system.
When we picked up the S90 the first thing we noticed was the control ring built around the lens. It is used to adjust camera settings and can have multiple functions assigned to it. For instance it can act as a zoom ring, with each click jumping between the traditionally popular 28, 35, 50, 85 and 105mm equivalent focal lengths. Other functions can also be assigned to it using it to adjust either the focus, shutter-speed, aperture, exposure compensation, white balance or ISO.
We were particularly impressed with the way the S90 combines photographer-friendly features with its simple and uncomplicated body design and smooth finish.

LONDON, UK, 19th August 2009:
Canon has announced a new range of PIXMA All-In-One and Photo printers that offer intelligent, high-quality printing for everyone - while also making them easier to use. The range - comprising of seven new All-In-Ones, a premium quality A4 Photo Printer and an A3 office printer - harness the latest Canon printing technologies for photo-lab quality results.New to PIXMA in 2009 is Auto Photo Fix II, an improved version of the automatic image-correction function first introduced in Canon’s Easy-PhotoPrint EX software in 2008. Canon is also making webpage printing simpler and smarter with the introduction of Easy-WebPrint EX allowing users to clip webpage information and build their own relevant, printable documents. Canon’s 2009 PIXMA inkjet All-In-Ones are also easier to use with the introduction of larger colour LCD displays and improved Easy-Scroll Wheel with 4-way cursor controls on some models. All 2009 PIXMA printers offer class-leading print speeds that are even faster than last year’s models, while Canon has also become one of the first printer manufacturers to adopt ISO/IEC 24734, 24735 print and copy speed measurements across its entire inkjet range – making it simpler to make direct model-to-model comparisons using industry standards. These new features join existing Canon technologies like FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) printhead technology and ChromaLife100+, enabling users to produce high quality, long lasting prints with any kind of document.
All-In-One PIXMA Printers:
Canon’s seven-model strong PIXMA All-In-One line-up includes three new entry-level models aimed at first-time users and students – the PIXMA MP250, PIXMA MP270 and PIXMA MP490. Two mid-range models – the PIXMA MP550 and PIXMA MP560 – offer ease of use and quality thanks to single ink tanks, while two flagship All-In-Ones – the PIXMA MP640 and PIXMA MP990 - are suited to any user, from digital camera enthusiasts to professional photographers.
Like the rest of Canon’s 2009 PIXMA range, the entry-level PIXMA MP250, PIXMA MP270 and PIXMA MP490 all feature Auto Photo Fix II - an improved version of the image correction function included in last year’s Easy-PhotoPrint EX software. Auto Photo Fix II makes it easy to correct underexposed images by using multi-zone algorithms to assess each area of an image before intelligently applying just the right amount of correction, ensuring you get beautifully balanced prints.
Easy-WebPrint EX enables web-users to clip key parts of a webpage that they’d like to print. The software, which is available to download from Canon, allows users to collect, edit and combine web content from different web pages. This ensures that users only print the information that is useful to them and affords them the potential to save paper and ink.

Crawl Into Another Person's Skin... & Walk Around...

I guess it's fair to say that Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books. I've read (and LOVED) so many great classics, but this book still makes me pause to think when the characters and/or plot crosses my mind. And, I often think about that famous image--of crawling into another person's skin and walking and walking around. For me, it's the eye altering. That change of perspective is what we all desperately need some days!I want to see. I want to understand--not only myself, but others as well. And, literature helps me to do that. I'm immersed in the plots and stories of other people, places and experiences--all drawn from that enduring universality we all want to understand. Literature (books, poems, stories & all) gives me voices--they call, laugh, cry & scream out at me in words. And, some books stay with us beyond the first or second reading; they stay with us, and make us rethink our own actions/reactions. How well do we ever really try to understand? How does literature help you to see (or learn or feel or open your mind and heart)? Harper Lee writes: "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." Experience the quotes, from To Kill a Mockingbird. Also, take a look at questions, a review, and related books. What do you think about the novel? When you first read it, what struck you about the book? Has it stayed with you? Have you read it more than once?

What Do We Expect?

Number and words and whatever comes in between...The Phantom Tollbooth is a modern fairy tale--famous for its wordplay and witty interplay. Instead of a wardrobe or a looking glass, young Milo travels to the Kingdom of Wisdom through a magic tollbooth, where he must make sense of a war between the people of words (from Dictionopolis) and the people of numbers (from Digitoplis).
In The Phantom Tollbooth, Norton Juster writes: "Expectations is the place you must always go to before you get to where you're going. Of course, some people never go beyond Expectations, but my job is to hurry them along whether they like it or not."
Have you read The Phantom Tollbooth? What did you think? Are there other books with which you would compare it? And, there's something else... when you looked at the cover, and/and or read about the book, what did you expect? Does the cover art ever influence your choice in books?

About the Artwork

The grand essence of couture is portrayed through the modern elegance of Ashley David’s color-infused ink sketches and gangling femme figures. Born into the glamorous world of 1970’s Parisian sophistication, David immersed herself in couture culture while studying and traveling throughout the world’s most fashion-forward cities from New York to Milan. Her experience provided her with insight into color, trends, and textures that she used in illustrations for design houses and fashion magazines. She now lives in California where she works in her studio overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Advanced Combative Tactics (DVD)

Why? Because His Incredible New Discovery Is The Astonishing Scientific KEY To Easily Defeating Larger… More Aggressive Opponents… Even Multiple Attackers… Without ANY Fancy Kicks, Punches or Strikes!
This New Cutting-Edge "ACT" System Virtually Eliminates aralyzing Brain-Freeze… Allowing You to "Tap Into" Your Body's Own Brutal… Vicious… And Devastatingly-Effective "Natural" Fighting Instincts -- No Matter What Your Size or Skill Level! At first I didn't believe it either. A martial arts "lab geek" developing a devastating new scientific fight system. Natural. Easy-to-learn. No complex kicks or punches. Bypasses the part of the brain that causes "freeze-up". Sounded way too good to be true. And I can say that this ACT system is nothing short of astonishing. It's based on simple… "natural"… and easy-to-learn strategies already "hardwired" into the instincts of the human body. That's why it took a martial artist who studied biology in college to figure this out.

Here's just a taste of what you'll discover: A simple "visualization" secret that forces your brain from "victim" to "predator" mode. Use this trick to suddenly turn the tables on ANY attacker in seconds -- putting YOU in command. How speaking certain "action" words out loud will actually "trigger" your own brain to respond from shock to decisive action. Shannon gives you the key words that work best for complete elimination of "brain-freeze". Weird stuff -- but the results are nothing short of amazing. An easy "Internal Strike Count" that will focus your mind like a laser beam -- stopping you from committing the biggest mistake that even experience fighters make. A simple "under fire" drill that will bury Shannon's simple fight tricks deep into the "gross motor" parts your brain for instant recall under ANY conditions. The "10-second" rule and why it's critical that you use it in all confrontations -- no matter how innocent they first appear.

You'll discover secrets like: A "flinch-driven" cover trick to instantly protect you from a sucker punch. It's a simple twist on your own primitive reflexes -- and it really works! You won't forget this one! A simple "push-pull" action that effectively DOUBLES your striking power. Using this one secret — even "little guys" can deliver devastating knock-out blows. An easy "ballistic disengagement" -- perfect for buying extra time to add space… deal with multiple opponents… or simply plan an escape route. Your choice! Astonishingly effective "defensive blocks" for the most common strikes you'll encounter. You'll be absolutely untouchable and ready to counter attack. Why turning or backing away from a "haymaker" punch is the stupidest thing you could do. Follow Shannon's simple defensive rules and you'll quickly be able to deal with this -- and 99% of all other strikes. The secrets to striking from an "unattached" and "attached" position using devastating straight-line palm strikes, elbows, knees and foot stomps. Bam-bam… one, two, three… fights over… and you're the one walking away.

Be The BodyGuard (DVD)

With your permission… and with strict precautions for privacy… I want to rush you a special package that has been sending shockwaves among "in the know" men of all ages in this country. No other fighting expert has ever shown civilians these specific secrets before. Not any of the Spec Op trainers you've seen, not any of the federal agents, not any of the SWAT cops or foreign Special Forces. What I'm about to show you is, in itself, one of the most devastatingly-effective fighting techniques you'll ever discover. It's easy to learn, simple to use… and yet will instantly immobilize, humiliate and demoralize your opponent… no matter how bigger, stronger or "better trained" he thinks he is. He goes against you, he's going DOWN. Hard, into his own blood and teeth and tears. And, if you choose, he's going OUT. He will be at your mercy so fast, he won't have time to register real fear. He'll simply go from whatever cocksure state he was in that made him think he could "take you"… to the sharp, nasty blackness of a concussion. Like having the lights switched off. The speed and certainty of these tactics are crucial… because every move you are about to learn ASSUMES you will have someone you care for with you. And thus, your attention will be split at least in half… and you MUST know how to deliver damaging blows with quick results, without ever putting your charge in danger. This is something every other training program I've ever seen ignores. And yet… as you should know… there are FEW times when you're completely alone. If you have a family, this is especially critical to understand. Even if you're still single, you'll almost always have a friend, a girlfriend, a family member… or someone's kids close by. In the house, you will be the first to wake up when there's danger at night. But everyone else in the house will soon come into danger, curious and oblivious. You KNOW that even your closest friends do not understand the need to learn "real" combat-based self-defense tactics. That means, when danger strikes…You're The Go-To Guy. FBI and copy statistics confirm this. Criminals LOVE to attack families that appear vulnerable and distracted. Many THRIVE on attacking — in groups — couples, and aren't afraid to nail guys obviously out on a date.

Medela Hydro Gel Pads: Babies Aren’t The Only Ones Who Need Soothing

I suffered (and I mean suffered) from thrush, an infection breastfeeding mothers often experience, with both my babies.
It is absolutely no fun, but I found something that really helps alleviate the pain.
Medela's Tender Care Hydre Gel Pad ($13/4-pack) are sterile, jelly-like pads that soothe and cool the skin.
They may be just the thing a new mom needs to keep breastfeeding on track.

Lansinoh Breast Pumps: Excellent Pumps For a Great Price

As a mother of two sons (2 ½ years old and 4 months old) who strongly believes in the benefits of nursing, it didn’t take long until I discovered the Lansinoh product line.
The Virginia-based company was founded 20 years ago by a breastfeeding mom and to this day focuses on nursing equipment.
No wonder I was excited to use a Lansinoh breast pump when I had my second baby.
With the first I had rented and borrowed Medela pumps and although they worked well, I wasn’t looking forward to pumping.
While it is incredibly useful if you need baby-free time with as little guilt and worries as possible, it’s not exactly a nice experience.
It also doesn’t help when the electric pump looks and sounds like a generator or when cleaning all the parts of the manual pump takes almost as long as it does going to the movies.

The Manual Breast Pump ($35) does have eight annoying parts that need to be cleaned but it is easy to assemble, and it has some nice features: among others it comes with extra valves (those little thingies that are essential for the suction but are easy to lose), a cleaning brush and two bottles (even though it can be used with many standard bottles) and a bottle stand that can also be used as a flange cover. But the best part is a cushion that needs to be put onto the pump’s funnel – Lansinoh trademarked it as "ComfortSeal cushion," and I have to say they have every reason to be proud of it. It is very comfortable and creates a strong though painless seal, and the pumping went without problems.
No wonder my expectations about the Double Electric Breast Pump ($120-150) were high. And It is very small and light and can be used with either an AC adapter or (six AA) batteries. Thanks to two diaphragms that separate the bottles from the tubing and prevent the milk from backing up into the pump it is not only fairly easy to clean but also safe to share, borrow or pass it on to fellow mothers. So far, so good.

g-bike by Kickboard USA: A High Tech Balance Bike

The g-bike by Kickboard USA ($140) is a high-tech, aluminum foot bike that weighs under four pounds and looks super sleek.
The seat and steering-wheel height are both easily adjustable so it grows with the kids. The small, plastic Rollerblade-type wheels won’t mark the floor if you decide to bring it in on yucky days.
Finn took a bit longer to master the g-bike but now rides it with ease.
Balance bikes give small kids the feel of a real bike and teach the balance and coordination required to ride one. My hope is that, when the time comes, we’ll be able to transition to a pedal bike without using training wheels. Maybe next summer!

Fisher-Price Cradle Swing: The New Parent Lifesaver

My brother is having his first baby and like all new parents, he and his wife are completely baffled by what baby gear they really need. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the products they’re going to absolutely need in the first few months of their daughter’s life.
One of the products that literally SAVED us the first few weeks of Anya’s life was the Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium Cradle Swing ($120). I don’t even recall if we registered for it but we received it at our shower and it was definitely the best unexpected gift. The compact size of the box is deceptive as it doesn’t exactly have the smallest footprint. Additionally, the colors of the seat were a bit garish for us (we’re mid-century modern folks). But we discovered that none of that mattered once we started using it on a daily basis.
One thing you may hear about in the beginning as a new parent is how important it is to get baby on a schedule. Whether you plan to follow that philosophy or not, for the first weeks of your child’s life, you have no choice in the matter. Baby doesn’t know the difference between night and day and if you want to sleep a solid 4+ hours at night, too bad because your baby thinks it’s time to party as much as you want him to be more awake during the day. After the adrenaline wears off, you’re going to crash hard and you need some rest so what do you do with the kid who not only wants to be held but wants to be rocked?
in our case, we had the Cradle Swing so we put Anya in there at those wee hours in the morning when we thought we were going to die of exhaustion. We kept ours in the living room so we’d crash on the couch while the swing rocked and rocked and rocked and often put her to sleep. Then during the day, we’d use it when we needed a break or when we wanted to prepare or eat a meal. When she was awake, she loved to look up and watch the aquarium mobile and I’m sure the nature sounds lulled her as well.

Ju-Ju-Be WannaBe: The Bag That Made Our First Plane Trip Doable

There are times when leaving your house with kids seems downright impossible. There is just too much to consider.
When my twins were infants, it was formula, diapers, change of clothing, small toys. When I had potty-training toddlers, it was extra clothes and underwear, a potty seat. For all ages, it’s water, and snacks, and — heaven forbid — anything that I might actually have to carry for myself!! And that is when I am leaving the house to head to the playground!
I was recently panicking when I had to consider how to manage a five hour plane flight with my now 3 ½-year old-twins… by myself. Admittedly, the task might be more daunting with twins, but alas, I suspect that all of us have gone through the "how in the world am I going to carry this" dilemma at some point (or many) since they became parents.
And now there is an answer. Ju-Ju-Be, maker of designer diaper bags of all sizes, as well as bags dads won’t whine about carrying, now has a bag for traveling: the WannaBe travel and overnight bag ($160)
According to the company, the bag is named for "all the places we Wannabe." And truth be told, I can imagine being those places with this bag. It has room for all of the things that I mentioned above — and more. It has small plastic pouches for wet items to be safely kept, it has pockets — both zipper and mesh — galore.
But we’ve all seen big bags before. And while the quality of the material and the variety and funkiness of the patterns is enough to get you to buy the bag, it gets better. In fact, I had a fairly big diaper bag for the first two years I had the kids, but this one — at 19″ x 17″ 8″ it’s truly one of the largest that I’ve seen — IS A BACKPACK TOO!!! It has straps that can be hooked on to create two shoulders straps for the bag to be carried. Which means two arms free in the airport. Which for a mom of twins flying without dad this past month meant possibilities and sanity.

Cybex Strollers, Car Seats and Baby Carrier Preview

Cybex is coming! Not to be confused with the gym equipment manufacturer, this German company will be offering infant and booster car seats, baby carriers and strollers.
We had a preview of the line that will be available late summer and winter.
We were impressed by all of Cybex’s products, but the 2-Go Baby Carrier ($100) really blew us out of the water.
Suitable for babies from 3 months up to 40 lbs, it has ergonomically formed shoulder straps and distributes the child’s weight evenly on the parent’s hips, not back — similar to the ErgoBABY Carrier, but with even more positions and way more style.
There are 5 positions; facing inwards, hip position — facing inwards, front facing outwards, front facing as a mobility seat — for older babies with the top part folded down, and on the parent’s back.
Read more to hear about which products we’re most excited about!
The Aton Infant Car Seat (price TBD) is for babies up to 30 lbs, has a force absorbing shell, removable inlay (to grow with the child) and can be used, with an adapter, as a travel system with the Cybex’s Callisto, Onyx, and Topaz Strollers.
The Solution X-Fix Booster Seat (price TBD) is for children ages 3 ½ – 12, has a 3 position headrest, linear side impact protection, reclining backrest, and 11 height positions (so the booster seat can grow with a child).
Cybex’s strollers include the Callisto and the "gem" strollers: Topaz, Onyx and Ruby.
The Callisto ($350) has terrific spring loaded suspension, a two part fold (very common in European strollers), 3 position sun canopy, weighs 20 lbs, and a detachable bumper bar. It turns into a travel system with their Aton Infant Car Seat or a carry cot (around $160).
The Topaz ($260) has a detachable bumper bar, a height adjustable handlebar, 4 reclining positions, 2 position leg rest and weighs 17 lbs.
The Onyx ($220) has 4 reclining positions, a 2 position leg rest and weighs 15 lbs. Both the Topaz and the Onyx will also take the Aton Car Seat with the adapter.

Kokopax Classic Carrier: Cuckoo for Kokopax!

People who know me (and my obsessive babywearing ways) know that I have often turned up my nose at traditional frame carriers for babies. Now that I’ve tried a Kokopax Classic Carrier ($180), though, it looks like I have to eat my words.
A modern and stylish interpretation of a frame carrier, the Kokopax combines all the convenience of frame carriers (the baby is higher up, the carrier can stand on the ground with baby in it, it’s easy to put baby on your back) with the fashionable appearance and comfort of some of the more modern carriers (namely, it doesn’t make me feel like I’m going to topple backwards like other frame carriers can).
It comes in six gorgeous colorways – I have the Espresso, which, as a bonus, is very dad-friendly. And my 15-month-old daughter loves it so much we actually have to hide it when we’re not using it so she doesn’t ask to go in.
When I first tried the Kokopax, I worried that the lack of a waistband might be uncomfortable, but boy was I wrong. I love having less to fiddle with and I actually find it liberating to not have anything around my waist. The carrier, which is designed for children from 6 months to 2 years (or 35 lbs), has an adjustable lumbar support bar that rests against the wearer’s lower back and really helps support the weight of the baby.
The Kokopax Classic Carrier is amazing. The price, though it may seem high, is comparable with other frame carriers and the Kokopax has so many great features – a toy ring, a storage pocket, a cute green carry bag and more. There are even adorable tote bags and baby sun hats available in carrier-matching prints. In fact, I think the only down side to this carrier is that I didn’t get one sooner.

LeapFrog Tag Junior: Tag! You’re it!

The LeapFrog Tag system has been on the market for a while, but now there’s a new version that lets the tiniest toddlers get in on the Tag fun. Tag Junior is a book-reading system for kids ages two to four. It sells for $35 with one book and additional books are $11 each.
The "book pal" is a small optical scanner that is easy for a small child to hold and operate. It reads the dot patterns hidden in the art work and text (I can barely see them!) and plays up to 150 sounds per book. The books are sturdy board books with stories, activities and sounds. Kids push the book pal down like a rubber stamp. It’s really easy enough for a two-year-old child to manage, and my almost-four-year-old son won’t share it with his little brother!
The library of Tag Junior books is extensive with licensed books including Dora the Explorer, Winnie the Pooh, Dr. Seuss and Curious George. Each book focuses on a different subject including the alphabet, colors and animal sounds. They challenge kids to "find something blue!" or ask, "Which animal makes this sound?"
LeapFrog Learning Path is a robust online system that ties together all of the LeapFrog learning products including Tag, Tag Junior, Leapster II and Didj. By linking the toys to a PC with the included USB cable, parents can track the child’s progress. It’s like an online report card that lets parents see what the child plays over and over and even which questions they’ve missed. If they’ve mastered a certain area, like colors or letters, the system will suggest the next software title to try. It’s great if you use LeapFrog products for a moment of peace and don’t want to watch every single second of the child’s gameplay. (We’ve all got the sound tracks memorized already!)
The book pal can greet the child by name. Parents just connect to a PC and enter the child’s name. If your child’s name isn’t among the 1900 names supported, LeapFrog takes suggestions and notifies parents when their child’s name is added. In the meantime, it can call your child by your favorite nickname, like "Buddy" or "Princess".
One downside is that the book pal only holds five books at a time. Though it’s really easy to go online and select the ones you want, only the included book is ready to go out of the box. I can see some impatient birthday party guests and I wish I didn’t have to explain that, if we buy that sixth book, one of your old books is going to be unreadable with the book pal.
Tag Junior even has a volume control so it’s a great thing to bring along on a trip. My kids are loving this system and I love anything that has them spending independent time with a good book!

Flutter Wing Disney Fairies Dolls: Posable Dolls For Tinkerbell Fans

If your little girl is a fan of the Disney Fairies, check out these new 5″ Flutter Wing Disney Fairies dolls ($9.50-$13) available at Disney Stores and DisneyStore.com.
Choose from Tinker Bell, Rosetta, Silvermist, Fawn and Iridessa, all of whom are fully posable and come with a flower-shaped stand that Anya thinks is an umbrella.
Unfortunately, the feature that they’re named for — "Flutter Wing" — is their weakest. When you press a button on their backs, their wings "flutter" but just ever so slightly. They’re still really cute and a new favorite of my Fairy-obsessed child.
Anya says her favorite is Iridessa (voiced by Raven-SymonĂ©) but it used to be Silvermist (voiced by Lucy Liu). Personally, I was hoping for a Vidia doll who is kind of my favorite because she’s mean without being evil, a rare thing in Disney movies.

couture interiors: Living with fashion marnie fogg

Examining the imaginative and compelling way in which fashion has permeated 21st century culture, this book considers the relationship between fashion on the catwalk and architecture, interiors and products. Many fashion designers extend their aesthetic into interiors and products for the home as a natural progression from clothing the body. The home is now subject to the same directional trends as fashion, in part because so many designers are extending their practice to include interiors, as well as products and accessories. The fusion between fashion and interiors has never been more relevant. The proliferation of ideas, the speed of manufacture and an increasingly visually literate consumer have all resulted in interiors being subject to the same desire for innovation, change and fashionability as fashion. This investigation of the hectic dissemination of trends takes the reader on an eclectic, adventurous excursion into living with fashion.
Marnie Fogg works as a lecturer in fashion and culture at the University of Nottingham. She is the author of best selling Boutique: A Sixties Cultural Phenomenon and Print in Fashion: Design & Development in Fashion Textiles.
